“You’re a couponer?  Are you like the ones in that Extreme show?”

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked that, I wouldn’t need coupons at all!   The answer is a resounding ‘NO!’ and today’s trip to Shoppers Drug Mart sums up my savings style … slow and steady.  I used a few coupons, nothing too flashy, and saved some money.  I’ve never been one to take photos of my groceries (afterall, who really needs to know the colour of my toothbrush?!), but to demonstrate that I really did buy stuff that we need and use, here goes!

Here’s the break down:

$78.29 sub-total before sale prices and coupons

$18.75 in coupons (you need to add these up manually – they show on the receipt as VENDOR CPN or STORE CPN)

$14.46 in savings from sale prices (these show up automatically on your receipt as You Have Saved)

OOP expense $44.53 for 44% SAVINGS

I doubt the TLC camera crew will be knocking on my door anytime soon!

If I stretch the numbers as far as I can, I could technically say that I had 49% Savings if I factor in the 1,620 Optimum Points I earned and the $.30 dividend we’ll receive on our Visa Card in December!  We needed some prescriptions filled tonight, so I bought a $100 card on the way into the store and earned 1,000 points, and then got an additional 620 points from my purchases.  It’s surprising how quickly your points can grow – always try to remember to buy a gift card on the way into the store for the amount that you anticipate spending on that trip.

So while I’m pleased to have saved some money on staples that we needed, I certainly can’t lay claim to being an Extreme Couponer, and have no illusions that a camera crew from TLC will come knocking on my door anytime soon (although if they did, I’d be sure to make sure my lime green toothbrush makes it into a shot!)  And while there are times that we get FREE stuff using our coupons, I truly believe that steady savings is likely the reality for many of us couponers.  Agreed?

Happy Couponing!
