Step 1: I found the $1 Canadian Cash Back rebate on Checkout 51 this week. We have just opened our last box of Rice Krispies from our cereal stockpile and I’m hoping to send Rice Krispies treats to some upcoming children’s Hallowe’en parties.
$1 OFF wasn’t enough to tempt me to buy a box at full price. My next step is always to look for other layers of savings. New to Checkout 51? Here’s the Canadian Coupons Checkout 51 Beginner’s Guide.
Step 2: I checked my coupon binder to see if I had any coupons for this. Yes! I’d spotted the $1 OFF Rice Krispies coupon on a Tear Pad a Food Basics last week. I took 2.
What’s the etiquette on how many coupons to take? Here are my thoughts in the Canadian Coupons Tear Pad Etiquette Guide! Combined with the $1 rebate from Checkout 51 I still wasn’t tempted to redeem my coupons. I need at least 1 more layer of savings!
Step 3: I typed “Rice Krispies” into FlyerOnFire.com to see if they are on sale anywhere this week. This is one of my favourite websites for determining when and where I will match my coupons with sale prices. Even though it’s an Ottawa/Gatineau based website, many of the flyers are Canada wide. I learned that Rice Krispies are on sale for $2.99 at Super C in Quebec – even the big 440g box! Since I live close enough to Quebec, I am able to price-match their flyer at our local Walmart. Problem is, we don’t get the Super C flyer in our ad bags. No problem … see step 4!
Step 4: I changed my Reebee city to Gatineau and
opened the Super C flyer on my cell phone. By scrolling through the flyer on my phone ahead of time, it was cached in my phone and I just needed to open the app again in the store even though I didn’t have any wifi access. No need to waste my data minutes on this one!
Step 5: I made sure to set the 2 boxes of Rice Krispies on the belt for separate transactions so that I could submit 2 different receipts for the Checkout 51 rebate. We have 3 accounts in our household (2 cellphones and an iPad) but since I only had 2 tear pad coupons, I didn’t bother with the 3rd.
Step 6: I handed over my tear pad coupon and told the cashier I would like to price match with the Super C flyer. Instead of a bulky paper flyer, I handed him my cell phone, opened to the Reebee app with the image of the cereal boxes and price showing. By tapping gently on the screen, the date shows in the bottom corner. I always hand over my coupons when the cashier is scanning the item so that s/he can verify the size and variety without having to sift through my bags at the end.
Step 7: I uploaded my receipts to Checkout 51 the minute I got home – towards the end of the week some of the offers are depleted and I didn’t want to miss out on the extra $2 in savings!
Regular price: $4.98
Price matched price: $2.99
Coupons tendered: $1
Checkout 51 rebate: $1
$.99 per box (the big one!) = 81% OFF
And all of this took an extra 3 minutes of my time. No printing, no flyers in my purse. I love how slick and “sexy” couponing is becoming!
