We’ve all chuckled at one time or another about the funny variations of the expression “When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade” and I really do admire people that are able to see the bright side in all things. Our family has been pelted with some lemons in the past few months and we’re beginning our new relationship with Multiple Sclerosis. We’ve been welcomed with open arms by the MS community and are uber impressed with the compassion that each medical professional has extended. Truly remarkable people.
At a time like this, naturally I’m reflecting on what’s important in my life and what could be “trimmed” to make room for new challenges and responsibilities. Would it surprise you to hear that couponing made the “keep” list?!
Last Saturday morning I savoured 2 hours alone with my coupons and flyers in a hospital waiting room. It was heavenly to get all of my planning done in one shot, uninterrputed, and I ended up saving over 60% on all of our groceries this week and was able to re-stock our pantry and freezer with some things we were running low on. My big trip to Shoppers Drug Mart on Wednesday had 82% overall savings and I even came home with 2 dozen free eggs thanks to combining a manager’s mark down with the $1 OFF eggs coupon.
And while alone with my thoughts I wondered if I was using this “free time” to its full potential. The reflection turned to what couponing has meant to my life as a Save-at-Home-Mom and what role it will play as our family lifestyle changes a bit in the coming months. Here’s what my little hamster churned out:
- coupons help us consistently save 50% on groceries throughout the year
- anything that we can get at Shoppers Drug Mart, we’ll get for 80-90% OFF if I put the effort into planning
- I can earn a bit of income by blogging about coupons and frugal living
- combined, these savings allow me to work from home, saving on daycare, commuting, etc.
- working from home means I’m completely flexible and available for hospital visits and appointments
So coupons and blogging are here to stay. Not to mention that I really enjoy it! I love the feeling of saving in a store, and get such a kick out of everyone’s posts and comments on the Canadian Coupons facebook page. Y’all are like an extended family!
And while I was revelling in my epiphany that my hobby-turned-profession indeed has both intrinsic and extrinsic value (blah blah blah) I started flipping through an old donated magazine and found some great coupons to clip! That was all the affirmation I needed, and I’m adding magazines to my hit list for garage sales & thrift shops whenever I’m out and about this summer.
And a retro lemonade pitcher. I’ve decided we need one.
